Context

A portal that has to serve three jobs at once

Travel agents come to the site for three different jobs — destination information, marketing material they can use with their own clients, and specialised Disney training. Each is owned by a different group inside the business.

That makes the site the place where all three meet. It has to feel like one thing to an agent, no matter how many teams are working behind it.

My role

The interface, and the agreements holding it together

  • Built what agents actually use, and wrote the documentation the teams behind it build against.
  • Worked daily with service developers, product managers and QA so the pieces still fit when they came together.
  • Chased down problems on the live site and saw each one through to a fix I could prove.

Result

Shipped, and currently ongoing development

The portal is live at disneytravelagents.com and continues to take new work, with me on it as part of the ongoing team.

What I'd take to the next team

Writing things down is leadership work. It settles disagreements between teams before they ever reach the screen, and it is the fastest thing you can hand someone new.
